Story by Fada Amakye

A team from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) was attacked and their vehicles vandalized while conducting an operation in the Bogosu area of Ghana’s Western Region. The incident occurred on November 1, 2025, when the NAIMOS team intercepted an illegal mining activity along a roadside.

The team arrested three individuals, including two claiming ownership of the site, and found incriminating items such as a Smith & Wesson pistol, ammunition, and mobile phones. However, a tense standoff ensued when a group of people demanded the release of the arrested individuals, threatening to burn down the local police station.

Chief Superintendent Prince and other senior police officers led a 15-member task force to rescue the NAIMOS team, dispersing the crowd and preventing further violence. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has condemned the attack and called for investigations to identify the perpetrators.

Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, Director of Communications for the Ministry, described the attack as an isolated incident, emphasizing that NAIMOS is a multi-agency team with soldiers, police, and NIB personnel. The government remains committed to eradicating illegal mining and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
