Kwahu Traditional Council Demands Investigation into Police Raid on Abene Palace

Story by Fada Amakye

The Kwahu Traditional Council (KTC) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, demanding a full and transparent investigation into the dawn raid on the Kwahu traditional palace in Abene on November 17, 2025. The raid, which involved gunfire, brutal force, and the arrest of the Kwahuhemaa and the sitting omanhene, has been described as “unlawful, uncustomary, and illegal”.

According to the petition, the raid was carried out by a large contingent of police officers from Accra, who arrived at the palace around 4:00 am. The officers allegedly fired live ammunition, assaulted palace staff, and removed the number plates from the official palace vehicle. The Kwahuhemaa, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua III, and several palace staff were arrested and transported to Accra.

The KTC is demanding answers and action, including the provision of a copy of the court order allegedly enforced, proof of its service, and documentation authorizing the police operation. They are also seeking supervised access to the palace to retrieve personal belongings, including vital medication, and to address humanitarian concerns.

The IGP has directed the immediate release of the Kwahuhemaa and instructed the Police Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the circumstances surrounding the operation. The investigation aims to determine responsibility and prevent a recurrence of such operations.

The Kwahu Traditional Council has expressed outrage and disappointment over the incident, describing it as a breach of respect for traditional authority and an unnecessary show of force. The council is calling for a thorough investigation to restore public confidence in the rule of law and the sanctity of Ghana’s traditional institutions.
