The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has inaugurated a seven-member committee dedicated to the National Timber Monitoring Team. This crucial initiative aims to oversee timber operations in Ghana and identify any illegal activities within the industry.
The Minister emphasized the challenges ahead, noting that Ghana’s 288 forest reserves are difficult to monitor, and stressed the need for vigilant oversight.
He expressed confidence in the newly inaugurated team, believing they will significantly enhance the Forestry Commission’s ability to monitor and safeguard forest reserves across the country.
The establishment of the National Timber Monitoring Team is a key step in curbing illegal logging practices and promoting sustainable forest management.
Ghana has lost nearly half of its forest reserves due to illegal mining and logging activities, highlighting the urgent need for effective monitoring and enforcement.
