Alhaji Seidu Agongo Backs Okere Football League, Promises More Support Across Ghana

Excitement filled Twum-Guaso on Saturday, July 24, as the Okere Unity Community Football League was officially launched. The tournament will run from July to October 2026.

The league aims to unite communities in Okere constituency and use football to educate young people on social issues like HIV/AIDS and drug abuse.

Businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo donated footballs, a trophy, goalkeeper gloves and shin pads to kick off the league. The items were presented through the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

Alhaji Agongo said he plans to support the league beyond the Eastern Region.
“This is about our young people. When we invest in sports at the community level, we invest in their future,” he said. “I have provided some items to get things started, but this is just the beginning. I intend to do more to support this initiative across the various regions.”

The businessman is known for supporting education and healthcare in Ghana. Over the years he has built and renovated schools, paid school fees for needy students, and paid medical bills for vulnerable patients.

The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, praised the initiative. He said it should be copied across the country because it brings communities together and helps share important messages.

“The President is totally committed to the transformation of sports infrastructure in Ghana, and initiatives like this at the community level complement that vision,” Mr. Ampofo Ankrah said.

Organisers say the league is not only about sports. It will also be used to teach youth about health issues and to strengthen unity among towns and villages in Okere.

Traditional leaders, religious leaders, youth groups and residents turned out in large numbers for the launch.

Organisers hope the league will discover football talent and help with community development.

With Alhaji Agongo’s pledge to expand support, many believe the initiative could grow into a national program for youth development.
