Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, Deputy Minister for the Interior and former staff member of the Centre for Plant Medicine Research, has highlighted the centre’s achievements in herbal medicine research, development, and preservation. Speaking at the centre’s 50th anniversary conference, Terlabi recalled his involvement in initiatives such as the formulation of CASA Bravo and essential oil production, showcasing Ghana’s potential in plant medicine.
The centre has developed over 30 herbal products targeting communicable and non-communicable diseases, with innovative steps to enhance patient compliance and product accessibility. Terlabi commended the centre’s regulatory role as a testing institution for the FDA Ghana, ensuring safe and efficacious herbal medicines.
The centre’s conservation efforts, including medicinal plant gardens, guarantee a sustainable supply of raw materials. Terlabi urged exploration of promising frontiers like nanomedicine and biopharmaceuticals, revisiting research into cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and essential oils to develop high-value export-ready products.
Terlabi emphasized building on the legacy of Dr. Oku Ampofo and past staff, combining traditional wisdom with modern innovation to promote good health and wealth. The centre’s achievements demonstrate Ghana’s wealth in indigenous flora, offering opportunities for economic growth and healthcare improvement.
