Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, has called for a more inclusive society for persons with disabilities in Ghana. Speaking on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, she highlighted the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, citing statistics from the 2021 Population and Housing Census, which shows that approximately 2.1 million people, representing 8% of the Ghanaian population, live with some form of disability.

Hon. Aubynn commended the government’s initiative to provide free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, launched on October 25, 2025, but emphasized that more needs to be done to address the structural and environmental barriers that exclude persons with disabilities. She proposed several measures, including sustainable financing, enforcement of the Ghana Building Code, provision of assistive technology and support services, mobility and welfare support, improved data and monitoring systems, public awareness campaigns, and employment pathways.

“Our collective responsibility is to build a society where every Ghanaian, irrespective of physical, sensory, intellectual, or psychosocial disability, has the environment, support, and opportunity to thrive,” Hon. Aubynn said.
