“Water Use Analytics Reveals Potential Revenue Loss”
"Water Use Analytics Reveals Potential Revenue Loss"

Story by Fada Amakye
In a bid to tackle commercial water losses in urban water supply, Prof. Emmanuel Donkor has presented a comprehensive analysis of water use patterns. The presentation, themed “Addressing Commercial Water Losses in the Delivery of Urban Water Supply,” highlights the importance of data-driven decision-making in managing water resources.
Prof. Donkor’s analysis reveals that a significant number of customers in the Accra East region consume little to no water, with 16,887 customers recorded as having zero or negligible consumption in May 2025.
This raises questions about the effectiveness of the current tariff structure and the potential for revenue loss.
The presentation also highlights the need for the water utility to improve its billing and collection systems to minimize revenue loss. The presentation suggests that if all customers who consume little to no water were to consume just one cubic meter, the water utility could generate an additional 160,000 Ghana Cedis per month.
The analysis is part of a broader effort to address commercial water losses in urban water supply, and the findings have significant implications for water utilities and policymakers. By leveraging data analytics, water utilities can optimize their operations, reduce losses, and improve the overall efficiency of water delivery.
