“GEPA CEO Calls for Collective Efforts to Boost Shea Industry”

The CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Francis Kojo Kwarteng Arthur, has emphasized the need for collective efforts to further enhance the transformation of the shea industry in Ghana. Speaking at the second edition of the Shea Expo, Arthur noted that the industry has the potential to become a solid catalyst for economic development and employment generation.

Arthur highlighted the strong foundation laid by the inaugural edition of the Shea Expo, which demonstrated the enthusiasm and collaboration of all stakeholders in making the industry a success. The second edition is strategically aligned with President Akufo-Addo’s vision of accelerated export development, with a focus on the agriculture and agribusiness sectors.

The GEPA CEO pointed out that only about 40% of available shea nuts are currently being picked or harvested for processing, resulting in a staggering 60% loss annually. He called for collective efforts to address this challenge and ensure that producers can harvest at least 80% of the nuts for processing. This inefficiency translates to significant economic losses, which could be mitigated with improved harvesting and processing practices.

:The Shea Expo aims to:

1.Showcase the diversity and quality of Ghanaian shea products to attract potential buyers and investors.

2.Provide a platform for industry stakeholders to discuss key issues, share knowledge, and identify solutions to challenges facing the sector.

3.Offer training and capacity-building programs for young people to build their careers in the shea industry and enhance their export skills.

Arthur announced that GEPA will soon roll out a program to promote exports and exporting, with a focus on the shea industry. This initiative is designed to support the growth of the sector by providing exporters with the necessary tools, knowledge, and resources to access international markets.

The GEPA CEO expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his support to the shea industry.

The government’s commitment to developing the sector is evident in initiatives such as the Ghana Shea Landscape Emission Reductions Project (GLSERP), which aims to mitigate the effects of climate change on the fragile ecosystem of the Northern Savannah landscape while improving the shea value chain.

With the support of all stakeholders, the shea industry is poised to become a major contributor to Ghana’s economic development and employment generation. By working together, the industry can overcome its challenges and unlock its full potential, creating a brighter future for thousands of Ghanaians employed in the sector.
