Ghana’s Minister of State for Special Initiatives, Hon. Emmanuel Kwadwo-Agyekum, has revealed plans to tackle unemployment and boost the economy through a labour export program. The initiative, envisioned by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to address three key areas: unemployment, foreign exchange earnings, and skills development.

The program will cater to both skilled and unskilled labour, including professionals like doctors, nurses, and chefs, as well as welders, fabricators, and marine industry workers. With a potential revenue stream of $10-20 billion, Ghana can rival countries like the Philippines, India, and Egypt, which have successfully implemented similar programs.

“Labour export is not just a brain game, it’s a brain game,” Agyekum emphasized, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to address Ghana’s unemployment crisis. The minister’s vision aligns with President Mahama’s commitment to climate change action and sustainable development.

The Ghana Labour Exchange Program is expected to create opportunities for Ghanaians to work abroad, injecting much-needed foreign exchange into the economy. With countries like Morocco and Tunisia generating billions from labour export, Ghana is poised to tap into this lucrative market.
