The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has emphasized the significance of advancing Africa’s energy transition to achieve sustainable growth and shared prosperity. Speaking at a recent conference, Minister Jinapor highlighted the vast potential of solar energy in Africa, noting that the continent has about 60% of the world’s best solar resources.

Despite its vast solar potential, Africa faces significant energy challenges. About 600 million people in Africa do not have access to electricity, with rural areas being disproportionately affected. Africa consumes just 4% of the world’s energy, despite accounting for 17% of the global population. The Minister emphasized that bridging this gap is a collective opportunity to transform pipeline projects into bankable ones and attract greater private capital.

However, the Minister also noted that there are encouraging signs of progress in Africa’s solar energy sector. By the end of 2024, Africa’s solar power PV capacity had reached close to 14.3 gigawatts, with Southern Africa leading the way with 6.17 gigawatts. Ghana is also making progress, with the country fast becoming a solar leader in the region.

The Minister highlighted that Africa requires about $50 billion annually to invest in the energy sector, but is only able to mobilize about 10% of this amount. He emphasized the need for private sector equity investment to meet Africa’s energy security needs.

In conclusion, Minister Jinapor’s remarks underscore the importance of advancing Africa’s energy transition to achieve sustainable growth and shared prosperity. With solar energy being a key driver of this transition,

Ghana and other African countries must prioritize investments in this sector to unlock its vast potential. By working together, Africa can overcome its energy challenges and achieve a brighter future for its citizens.
