Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Police Service has commissioned new patrol boats for its Marine Police unit, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to enhance maritime security and protect its national interests.

The ceremony, attended by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, was a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting the police service with the necessary tools to guarantee the safety and security of citizens.

In his remarks, IGP Yohuno expressed gratitude to the Honorable Minister for the Interior and the government for their unwavering support to the Ghana Police Service. He also acknowledged the Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority, the International Justice Mission, Ghana Gas Company Limited, and the Ghana Maritime Authority for their contributions to the commissioning of the patrol boats.

The new patrol boats will significantly strengthen the Marine Police unit’s capabilities, enabling them to effectively patrol Ghana’s waters, respond to emergencies, and prevent maritime crimes. The boats are part of efforts to enhance maritime security and protect the country’s exclusive economic zone.

IGP Yohuno also recognized the support of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, which provided capacity-building training for marine police personnel, and the Lima Group of Companies, which organized seamanship and boat operating training for the personnel.

The commissioning of the patrol boats is a culmination of efforts by retired Inspector-Generals of Police who conceptualized the Marine Police unit. IGP Yohuno honored their legacy and expressed gratitude for their vision and leadership.

The event highlighted the importance of partnerships in enhancing maritime security and protecting national interests. The Ghana Police Service looks forward to continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
