Ghana's Prisons Get Boost with Drug Bank Launch, MP Calls for Support

The Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon and Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, has commended the Ghana Prisons Service for launching a drug bank initiative to improve healthcare delivery in correctional facilities.

Speaking at the launch, Sowah emphasized the importance of access to essential medicines for humane and effective rehabilitation of inmates. She acknowledged the commitment of former President John Dramani Mahama to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system, particularly through the National Health Insurance Scheme and the Ghana Health Trust Fund.

Sowah praised the Director-General of Prisons for her efforts to enhance the prison service, including exhibitions to showcase inmate talents. She encouraged continued collaboration and resource contribution to ensure the sustainability of the drug bank initiative.

The Deputy Minister highlighted the need for collective support, noting that improved healthcare in prisons benefits both inmates and the broader community. She pledged 10,000 Ghana cedis to support the initiative, urging others to contribute.

The drug bank aims to provide a reliable supply of essential medicines, enhancing healthcare delivery and rehabilitation in Ghana’s prisons.

The initiative reflects a commitment to care, responsibility, and hope for vulnerable populations.
