A stakeholder consultation on the draft legislative instrument for the Wildlife Resources Management Act 2023 is underway in Ghana, aimed at ensuring sustainable management of the country’s wildlife resources.
Hon. Yusif Sulemana, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, emphasized the importance of the consultation, saying it demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving wildlife management and promoting community involvement. He noted that the consultation is a critical step in ensuring that the regulations are practical, inclusive, and enforceable.
The consultation is part of a series of regional workshops planned to engage stakeholders from across the country. The draft instrument seeks to provide clarity on governance, management of protected areas, and regulations for wildlife trade and utilization. It also aims to promote community participation and benefit-sharing mechanisms, as well as enforcement measures and sanctions.
The government is committed to transparency and inclusivity in the process, seeking input from local communities, traditional authorities, district assemblies, conservation organizations, and private sector actors. The ultimate goal is to ensure that Ghana’s wildlife resources are managed sustainably for present and future generations.
The Wildlife Resources Management Act 2023 marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s environmental governance framework. The government is determined to ensure that the country’s wildlife resources are protected and managed effectively, contributing to biodiversity preservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
