"Mahama Emphasizes Importance of Cleanliness and Cultural Values"

Story by Fada Amakye
President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted the significance of cleanliness and cultural values in Ghanaian society. Speaking at an event, Mahama reminisced about his childhood days when cleaning the compound was a communal effort and a part of African traditional practice.
Mahama lamented that this value system has broken down, with many people unwilling to contribute to keeping their surroundings clean. He cited examples of modern societies like Japan and Singapore, which have maintained their cultural values and cleanliness despite being technologically advanced.
In these countries, Mahama noted, citizens take pride in keeping their environment clean, and littering is strictly penalized. He recounted an experience where a person picked up a piece of wrapper and disposed of it properly, highlighting the importance of instilling these values in children from a young age.
Mahama emphasized the need for Ghana to adopt a similar approach, suggesting that the Ministry of Education incorporate a curriculum on courtesy and responsible citizenship. This, he believes, will help train children to develop good habits and values that will stay with them throughout their lives.
By promoting cleanliness and cultural values, Mahama hopes to inspire Ghanaians to take ownership of their environment and work towards creating a cleaner and more responsible society.
