Professor Jeff Collins, a renowned expert in health, has emphasized the importance of understanding the commercial determinants of health in addressing nutrition challenges in Ghana. Speaking at the launch of a project aimed at exploring how commercial actors influence population health in Sub-Saharan Africa, Prof. Collins highlighted the need to consider the role of commercial actors in shaping health outcomes.
In a thought-provoking presentation, Prof. Collins noted that illegal mining is a critical factor in understanding the challenges of nutrition in Ghana. He emphasized that it is impossible to address nutrition challenges without considering the impact of illegal mining on the environment and public health.
The project, funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research in the United Kingdom, aims to explore how commercial actors influence population health in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project’s overall goal is to inform the development of coherent policies to promote health while rewarding sustainable development.
Prof. Collins emphasized the importance of regulatory frameworks in ensuring that businesses operate in a way that promotes public health. He noted that businesses are structured to generate profits and revenue for shareholders, and that criticism of businesses should be directed towards the need for appropriate legislative and regulatory frameworks to promote health.
The project brings together researchers from various institutions, including the University of Witwatersrand and the Active Population Health Research Center in Nairobi, Kenya. Prof. Collins expressed his delight in having partners from these institutions join him in Ghana for the launch of the project.
The project’s intention is to address national priorities, and Prof. Collins emphasized the importance of hearing from stakeholders about the directions that the project should take. He expressed his gratitude to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health and all representatives of government agencies, researchers, and civil society organizations for their participation in the launch event.
The project aims to contribute to a better understanding of the commercial determinants of health and their impact on nutrition challenges in Ghana. By exploring the role of commercial actors in shaping health outcomes, the project hopes to inform the development of policies that promote health and sustainable development.
