"Ghana Takes Over Chairmanship of Global Alliance Against Mass Atrocities"

The Government of Ghana has been recognized for its role in global conflict intervention and peacekeeping, and has taken over the chairmanship of the Global Alliance Against Mass Atrocities (GAAMAC). This marks the first time the chairmanship has moved out of Switzerland and Europe.

Ghana has a long history of contributing to international peacekeeping efforts, dating back to the early 1960s in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and more recently in Cote d’Ivoire and Sudan. The country’s commitment to preventing or minimizing conflict and crimes against humanity has been acknowledged globally.

GAAMAC is a community of commitment that enables states, civil society organizations, and academic institutions to exchange information, experiences, and challenges, and share practical solutions for the prevention of atrocities. The alliance focuses on preventing mass atrocity crimes, including genocide, ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

The Government of Ghana, led by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has pledged its full support to the Secretariat and the office of GAAMAC during their stay in the country. The Minister has assured that the government will work together with GAAMAC to prevent mass atrocity crimes and promote human rights and the rule of law.

:To prevent mass atrocity crimes, the global community must focus on:

1.Strategic corporations on early warning systems to track risk indicators and prevent hate speech.

2.Promoting human rights, empowerment of vulnerable groups, and respect for the rule of law.

3.Eliminating inequality and promoting inclusive societies to reduce the risk of atrocity crimes.

The appointment of Dr. George Amoh, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, as chair of GAAMAC is a testament to Ghana’s commitment to promoting peace and preventing mass atrocity crimes.
