"DVLA Puts Brakes on Nationwide Number Plate Registration Exercise"

Story by Fada Amakye
The Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced the postponement of its nationwide registration exercise for newly issued number plates, initially scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026.
According to Mr. Kafui Semevo, Director for Drivers Training, Testing, and Licensing, the decision was necessitated by the pending approval of crucial amendments to the road acts. Only one of the two expected amendments has been passed by Parliament, with the main amendment authorizing the use of new license number plates still pending.
The amendment is currently stalled due to Parliament’s recess, prompting the DVLA and Police to agree on a temporary measure allowing the use of existing DV number plates until the necessary legislation is approved.
“This temporary measure will ensure that drivers can maintain compliance with legal requirements while awaiting the legislative changes,” Mr. Semevo explained.
The DVLA is working closely with Parliament to expedite the approval process, aiming to implement the new system as soon as possible. The authority apologizes for any inconvenience caused and assures stakeholders that it is committed to ensuring a smooth transition to the new number plate system.
The postponement affects the rollout of the new number plates, which were expected to enhance vehicle registration and tracking. The DVLA will provide updates on the implementation timeline once the legislative hurdles are cleared.
In the meantime, drivers are advised to continue using their existing number plates, and the authority appreciates their understanding and cooperation in this matter.
