Breaking the Silence: Rev. Deborah Dotse Shares Her Journey with Postpartum Depression and Psychosis

Story by Fada Amakye

Reverend Deborah Dotse, a mental health survivor and advocate, has opened up about her struggles with postpartum depression and psychosis, a condition she battled in 2007. Speaking about her experience, she emphasized the importance of mental health awareness, highlighting that mental health issues can be hidden and often go undetected until symptoms become severe.

Rev. Dotse shared common signs of mental health struggles, including sadness, irritability, anger, and feelings of worthlessness. She encouraged individuals to be aware of changes in behavior and speech patterns, which can indicate mental health issues. “You can even determine it from the way the person begins to speak,” she said. “The person starts speaking in a kind of way like the person has lost hope.”

The mental health advocate also discussed how various life situations, such as financial crises, infertility, and grief, can contribute to mental health issues in marriages. She stressed the importance of communication between spouses, encouraging couples to be open and supportive of each other. “Communication is key,” she said. “Only then can the spouse know that you are actually going through a crisis.”

Rev. Dotse shared her personal experience, saying, “I was sad, I was irritable, I was angry, I was like worthless, like my life is over.” She emphasized that mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of their background or status.

Her story aims to raise awareness about mental health and encourage individuals to speak out about their struggles, seeking help and support when needed. By sharing her journey, Rev. Dotse hopes to inspire others to break the silence and seek help.
