“Suspect Arrested in Fatal Shooting Incident at Naming Ceremony”
The Accra police have arrested a key suspect in the fatal shooting incident that occurred on June 19, 2025, during a naming ceremony at Bawaa. The suspect, Gilbert Owusu, alias Star Boy, a 21-year-old okada rider, has confessed to the crime.
According to Ms. Supt Julianna Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, Accra Region, the incident occurred at about 7 pm when some individuals armed with locally manufactured weapons began firing indiscriminately. The shooting resulted in the death of a 33-year-old grandmother, Hell We Take Her, and injured another person, Priscilla, a 38-year-old trader, who is currently receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Center.
The police investigation established that the suspect had consumed alcohol laced with some narcotic substances before the incident. After committing the crime, he fled the scene on a motorbike and took refuge in Asakori, a suburb in the Ashanti region. Acting on intelligence, the police dispatched a team to Asakori, where they arrested the suspect.
The suspect has confessed to the crime, stating that he fired the weapon under the influence of alcohol. The police are working to recover the firearm, which the suspect claimed to have discarded after the incident.
The event organizer, Mr. Ibrahim Fashi Solomon, was also arrested and admitted to distracting the use of firearms at the event. Another accomplice was arrested, and a locally manufactured gun, empty cartridges, and gunpowder were retrieved. The police have strongly condemned the reckless and unlawful use of firearms at public and cultural events, which poses a great risk to public safety.
