A new survey by Prof. Sarpong A. Smart of the Kumasi Technical University has revealed who delegates think can best unite the NDC and who is most suitable to lead the party.

According to the survey, the focus for now is not on predicting the winner, but on measuring two key leadership attributes ability to unite the party after elections and suitability as flagbearer.

On who can best unite the party, Prof. Sarpong said National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General, is still in the lead.

The lead hasn’t changed much. General still leads with 24.5% followed by Hon. Eric Opoku with 20.4%, he stated.

He explained that the gap between the two leading contenders is about 4.1 percentage points. He was followed by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Haruna Iddrisu, Julius Debrah, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Prof. Joshua Alabi and others. Some respondents were undecided.

Prof. Sarpong noted that Haruna Iddrisu, who performed well in his previous study, has dropped this time because many delegates are unsure whether he will contest.

On suitability as flagbearer, General Johnson Asiedu Nketia again leads with 27.6%, closely followed by Eric Opoku with 26.4% a difference of just 1.2 percentage points.

Dr. Ato Forson came third with 16.1%, Haruna Iddrisu had 10.4%, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang 5.2%, Prof. Joshua Alabi 4.4% and Julius Debrah 4.1%.

Prof. Sarpong explained that when it is time for full prediction, all the attributes including winability and campaign impact will be put together, as delegates often tilt towards a candidate they see as both suitable and capable of uniting the party.

He stressed that for now the team is only testing the minds of delegates, and the figures may change when aspirants pick forms, go through vetting and start serious campaigning.
