“Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire Strengthen Regional Energy Cooperation with Wamkawa Interconnection Project”

The Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah, has welcomed stakeholders to a bilateral meeting in Accra to advance the 330 KV Ghana-Cote d’Ivoire interconnection project. The project aims to reinforce the interconnection between the two countries, improve grid stability, and enhance operational reliability.

The meeting will focus on key areas, including reviewing updated technical findings from feasibility studies, institutional framework for project implementation and governance, and environmental and social impact assessment. A major highlight of the meeting will be the adoption and signing of a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of two critical governance structures: the Joint Technical Steering Committee and the Joint Interstate Committee.

These structures will ensure effective coordination, accountability, and transparency in the project’s implementation. The project reflects the cooperation between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire and their shared vision of creating a resilient and integrated regional energy system.

The Government of Ghana has expressed its full support for the project, and the World Bank has provided invaluable support and financing for the initiative. The Deputy Minister has commended the consultant for the quality of work delivered and expressed gratitude to the entire project team from both Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire for their dedication and collaborative efforts.

The meeting is a significant step towards deepening regional energy integration and promoting economic growth and development in West Africa. With the support of the World Bank and other stakeholders, the project is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s energy sector, enabling the region to harness its energy resources more efficiently and promote economic growth and development.
