The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, says the Ghana Police Service has recorded major breakthroughs in its nationwide operations against robbery and murder.

Speaking at a press briefing, the IGP said his team monitored criminal activities in the Western, Northern, Greater Accra and other regions during the first quarter of the year and deployed special intelligence teams to undertake targeted operations.

He said all operations were successful, leading to several arrests and retrieval of weapons and ammunition.

Giving updates on seven major cases, the IGP said police have arrested 32-year-old Abraham Awundok in connection with the murder of Dr. Jesse Amwa and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amwasi, who were reported missing in April 2026.

According to police, investigations led to the recovery of the couple’s bodies. The suspect, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, allegedly murdered them, took their phones, money and vehicle, and fled to the United Arab Emirates.

He was declared wanted through an Interpol Red Notice on August 30, 2026 and was deported from Dubai to Ghana. The IGP said the suspect has admitted to the crime during interrogation.

Other breakthroughs include the foiling of robbery attacks on banks in Accra and Tema, where two suspects were shot dead and one arrested at Labone.

The police also dismantled robbery gangs operating in Wasakopung, Gieso, Rome, Abofokrom and Manso areas, arresting five suspects and retrieving three AK-47 rifles and 357 rounds of ammunition.

The IGP added that police have arrested suspects in connection with robberies in Bufei, Tamale and Yendi, the Kultor Market robbery and murder, and a robbery on the Enyiresi Central Road where a pump-action gun was retrieved.

He said five other suspects were also arrested with eight AK-47 assault rifles.

The IGP said investigations are ongoing and all suspects remain in custody.
