The Ghana chapter of the United Nations Global Compact Ocean Center was launched recently, marking a significant step towards promoting ocean sustainability and a blue economy in the country. The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Minister Emelia Atta, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the government’s commitment to implementing a sound national blue economy strategy. She noted that the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has revised its vision to align with the blue economy agenda, focusing on sustainability, resilience, and innovation.
The Minister highlighted that Ghana does not currently have a national blue economy strategy, but efforts are underway to develop one. A committee comprising representatives from various sectors, including academia, has been set up to work on the strategy. An inter-sectoral technical committee, hosted by the Ministry of Environment, is also working on the draft of the National Blue Economy strategy, under the supervision of the Senior Presidential Advisor for Government Affairs.
