Ghana's Energy Sector on the Path to Recovery, Says Deputy Minister

Deputy Minister for Energy, Richard Gyan-Mensah, has announced significant progress in stabilizing the country’s energy sector, citing improvements in power generation, fuel supply, and financial management. Speaking at the Ghana Energy Awards, Gyan-Mensah attributed the sector’s turnaround to difficult decisions, disciplined management, and strengthened stakeholder engagement.

The minister highlighted the challenges inherited by the current government, including a heavily indebted energy sector, multi-billion-dollar debts, and a decline in investor confidence. However, he noted that the sector is now showing signs of stability, with increased fuel supply, addressed financial obligations, and renewed investment outreach.

Gyan-Mensah assured Ghanaians that the ministry is committed to keeping the lights on, powering industries, and ensuring every household has access to energy.

He emphasized the government’s aim to increase renewable energy’s contribution to the national energy mix and connect every part of the country, including hard-to-reach areas.

The Deputy Minister praised the support of President John Dramani Mahama and stakeholders, crediting their collaboration for the sector’s progress. Gyan-Mensah reiterated the ministry’s commitment to modernizing the energy sector, strengthening reforms, and ensuring sustainable development.
