Lawyer George Opare Addo, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, has emphasized the importance of addressing opioid abuse and promoting the well-being of young people in Ghana. Speaking on International Youth Day, Addo highlighted the remarkable contributions of Ghana’s youth to innovation, entrepreneurship, social activism, and community development.

A Shift in Perspective
The Minister noted an encouraging shift in the role of young people in development programs, from being mere beneficiaries to becoming powerful agents of change. Ghanaian youth are leading community efforts, advocating for environmental sustainability, fighting for social justice, and creating opportunities for their peers.

Government Commitment
Addo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for young people to thrive. The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment is focused on five main thematic areas, with a key emphasis on the wellness and well-being of young people. The Minister stressed that no amount of development can take place when people are not in the best state of mind and health.

Combating Opioid Abuse
The Ministry has launched initiatives to combat opioid abuse, recognizing its devastating impact on young people. Addo commended the RNAQ Foundation for its donation of GH¢500,000 to support the Ministry’s efforts. The foundation’s initiatives, including food banks and support for young entrepreneurs, align with the Ministry’s vision.

The Minister expressed his desire to collaborate with the RNAQ Foundation and other organizations to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and youth empowerment. By working together, they can create opportunities for young people and support their development.
