"Lands Minister Pledges Support for GWCL's Desilting Efforts"

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Armah Kofi Buah, has assured the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) of financial support to desilt intakes of its treatment plants nationwide. The assurance was made during a courtesy call by the Managing Director of GWCL, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, on October 23, 2025.

Hon. Armah Kofi Buah stated that regular supply of clean water from GWCL is the priority of the Ministry. He added that discussions have been held with Goldbod, and they have indicated their willingness to support GWCL in its quest to desilt intakes of its treatment plants. “We are working on some budget to help your desilting or dredging work. We’ve had discussions with Goldbod, and they have indicated their willingness to come on board,” the Ellembelle Member of Parliament assured.

The Managing Director of GWCL, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, commended the President and the Lands Minister for their commitment to fighting the galamsey menace and ensuring the protection of water bodies. However, he expressed worry over resources to desilt the Intakes of their treatment plants, stating that the heavy silt at the Intakes has reduced the capacity of the treatment plants, and if not addressed, the reservoir may dry up during the dry season, affecting water supply to citizens.

The GWCL MD appealed to the Lands Minister to expedite action on the financial and logistical support, while commending him for his efforts thus far. “How do we get rid of the silt at the Intakes so that the water that comes can settle down for us to pump the water for treatment?” Mr. Mutawakilu emphasized. “And if it dries up, a lot of people will run out of water,” he alarmed.
