“Mental Health Authority Launches Initiative to Combat Suicide in Ghana”

The Mental Health Authority in Ghana is taking steps to address the growing concern of suicide in the country. Dr. Josephine Stiles Darko, Deputy Head of Communications at the Mental Health Authority, emphasized the need to change the narrative surrounding suicide and encourage people to speak up and seek help.

The Mental Health Authority has launched an initiative to combat suicide in Ghana, highlighting that suicide is no longer a crime in the country. The authority aims to inform the public that individuals struggling with mental health issues should feel comfortable seeking help without fear of stigma or judgment.

A key component of this initiative is the national suicide helpline, 0800678678, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This helpline provides support to anyone experiencing mental health challenges or suicidal thoughts, offering a lifeline to those in need.

The authority is also working to integrate mental health care into primary health care settings, making it easier for people to access help in their districts and regions. Despite the shortage of mental health professionals, the authority is exploring ways to utilize the limited resources available to provide support and care.

The initiative aims to reduce stigma and encourage open conversations about mental health, ultimately providing support and resources for those in need. By promoting awareness and understanding, the Mental Health Authority hopes to create a more supportive environment for individuals struggling with mental health issues.
