“Parliamentarian Calls for Increased Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking in Ghana”
Hon. Helen Adwoa Ntoso, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Gender, has emphasized the need for continued efforts to combat human trafficking in Ghana. Speaking at an event to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking, Hon. Ntoso highlighted the progress made in addressing this complex issue over the past 20 years, but also acknowledged the challenges that persist.
As a parliamentarian, Hon. Ntoso emphasized the critical role Parliament plays in fighting against human trafficking. She noted that Parliament is working to strengthen laws and policies to prevent and respond to human trafficking, enhance collaboration and coordination among stakeholders, and provide support and protection to victims.
Hon. Ntoso also stressed the importance of differentiating between child trafficking and child labor, citing instances where children arrested on the lake are mistakenly labeled as human trafficking victims instead of child laborers. She called for greater clarity and accuracy in addressing these issues.
The Chairperson also expressed support for NGOs working to combat child trafficking, acknowledging the crucial role they play in this fight. She emphasized the need for continued collaboration and coordination among stakeholders to ensure that Ghana is a safe and secure place for all citizens, particularly women and children who are vulnerable to exploitation.
Hon. Ntoso announced plans to inspect shelters in the Greater Accra region and beyond to ensure that trafficked children are receiving proper care and support. Her committee will also continue to advocate for the rights of victims and push for effective implementation of the Human Trafficking Act.
By working together, Hon. Ntoso believes that Ghana can make significant strides in combating human trafficking and protecting its most vulnerable citizens.
