"TEWU Slams Government Over Delayed Conditions of Service for Non-Teaching Staff"

Story by Fada Amakye

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) has expressed frustration over the government’s delay in concluding negotiations and signing conditions of service for non-teaching staff in public and technical universities, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Library Authority, and Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.

According to TEWU National Chairperson, Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, the union had suspended a planned strike in November 2024 to allow for negotiations, but despite repeated appeals and meetings, the government has failed to meet deadlines. The National Labor Commission had directed the union to suspend the strike and set a deadline for negotiations to be concluded by January 2025, which was later extended to March 2025.

The union claims that despite their efforts to engage with the government, no meaningful progress has been made, leading to the current impasse. TEWU is demanding immediate attention to the issue, citing the need for fair treatment and systemic change.

The strike’s outcome may have significant implications for Ghana’s education system and labor landscape, potentially affecting the academic year and the overall quality of education.

As stakeholders watch closely, the union remains resolute in its pursuit of justice and equity for its members.
