“Pharmacists Emphasize Importance of Leadership and Professional Development”

The Community Practice Pharmacists Association (CPPA) in Ghana recently organized a leadership and professional development seminar as part of its Community Pharmacy Month celebration. The event aimed to equip pharmacists with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their profession.

Pharm. Dr. Emmanuel Kwaku Ireland, Chairman of the CPPA, emphasized the critical role of pharmacists in providing medication therapy management and other services. He noted that pharmacists are essential in ensuring that patients receive the utmost benefit from their medications, and that their presence in the pharmacy is crucial for providing quality services.

Dr. Ireland highlighted the importance of leadership skills for pharmacists, particularly in managing staff and businesses. He emphasized that leadership is not just about titles, but about providing quality services, motivating staff, and making a positive impact on the community.

The CPPA has been promoting continuous professional development (CPD) among pharmacists, including training programs on opioid stewardship and leadership skills. Dr. Ireland encouraged pharmacists to take advantage of these opportunities to sharpen their skills and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in their field.

The CPPA conducted a baseline survey that showed a low presence of pharmacists in their pharmacies. However, with the implementation of services like medication therapy management, the presence of pharmacists has improved drastically.

Dr. Ireland attributed this improvement to the fact that pharmacists are now more accountable for providing quality services and are motivated to stay in the pharmacy. The leadership and professional development seminar is a testament to the CPPA’s commitment to promoting the development of pharmacists in Ghana.

By equipping pharmacists with the necessary skills and knowledge, the association aims to improve the quality of services provided to patients and enhance the profession as a whole.
