Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority. (DVLA) is set to introduce new vehicle number plates with advanced security features, including radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The new plates will display the Republic of Ghana logo, national flag, and a hologram, making them more secure and difficult to counterfeit.

Director of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr. Kafui Semevo, explained that the plates will be owned by vehicle owners, but remain state property. The number assigned to a vehicle will be retained by the owner, even if they sell the vehicle, and can be reassigned to another vehicle of the same category.

The new plates will have various categories, including private vehicles with a white background and commercial vehicles with a yellow background. The system will generate 6.7 million numbers for every prefix, ensuring that Ghana will not run out of numbers anytime soon.

The introduction of the new number plates is aimed at enhancing road safety, reducing revenue leakage, and improving security.

The plates will be rolled out later this year, and vehicle owners will be required to validate their plates every two years.
