Accra Turf Club Appeals To Mahama Over Demolition Of Race Course

The Accra Turf Club has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene after its Race Course at Borteyman was demolished.

According to the Club, on August 22, 2026, about 200 armed men led by persons identified as Clement Dzato and Azumah, with some police officers and 9 bulldozers, forcefully entered the premises.

The Club says they demolished about 100 horse stables, buildings, water storage facilities and other properties. Horses were forced out of stables and jockeys were ejected from their homes.

The Club says no court order was shown for the demolition.

The Accra Turf Club, which was established in 1923, is one of Ghana’s oldest sports clubs. It was moved to Borteyman after its original land at Ridge was taken for government projects.

The Club is calling on President Mahama, the Minister for Interior, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, the Attorney-General, the Inspector General of Police and the National Security Coordinator to intervene.

They want the encroachers removed, their access restored, and those responsible investigated and prosecuted.

The Club says the race course is more than just land, it is Ghana’s horse racing heritage and provides jobs for over 30,000 people including jockeys, trainers and horse owners.
