“Ghana Explores Sustainable Aviation Fuel to Reduce Emissions”

The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Dumelo, has emphasized the importance of developing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Ghana. Speaking at the ICAO Sustainable Aviation Fuel workshop, Dumelo highlighted the potential benefits of SAF production for the country’s agricultural sector and rural communities.

The development of SAF has the potential to stimulate demand for energy crops and agricultural residues, creating new value chains that benefit Ghana’s farmers, agribusinesses, and rural communities. With proper safeguards in place, SAF can support food security, promote sustainable land use, and enhance economic diversification in rural areas.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture stands ready to work with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Energy, ICAO, and other partners to assess the availability and sustainability of agricultural feedstocks for SAF production. This collaboration aims to reduce emissions and build a green economy that provides jobs and opportunities for Ghanaians, particularly youth and women in agriculture.

Hon. Dumelo John commended ICAO and GCAA for their leadership and expressed the Ministry’s support for the outcomes of the workshop. He hopes that the workshop will mark the beginning of a strong, practical roadmap for SAF development in Ghana and a model for sustainable aviation in Africa.

The development of SAF in Ghana has the potential to contribute to the country’s efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainable development. With collaboration and partnerships, Ghana can harness the benefits of SAF production and create new opportunities for its people.
