“Ghana Launches Green Cooling Program to Reduce Emissions and Promote Sustainable Cooling”
Gunnar Wegner, Sustainable Energy and Climate Cluster, GIZ Ghana, stated that Ghana has taken a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable cooling solutions with the launch of the Green Cooling Program. The program, funded by the KliK Foundation, aims to transform the country’s air conditioning sector by introducing energy-efficient and climate-friendly technologies.
Ghana has taken this significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable cooling solutions with the launch of the Green Cooling Program. The program seeks to decrease direct and indirect emissions from the air conditioning sector, contributing to Ghana’s climate goals. By introducing highly energy-efficient air conditioning systems, the program aims to reduce energy consumption and enhance energy security.
The program includes training measures to transform the refrigeration and air conditioning sector, ensuring technicians have the necessary skills to install and maintain green air conditioning systems. It promotes the use of green split air conditioners that feature coolants with lower global warming potential and higher energy efficiency. Additionally, the program aims to accelerate the uptake of air conditioners using natural coolant R-290 (propane) in household and public sectors.
The program aims to install 150,000 green split air conditioners by 2030, reducing emissions and promoting sustainable cooling. This initiative is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment and mitigating climate change. By promoting energy-efficient technologies, the program can help reduce energy consumption, saving households and businesses money on energy bills.
Furthermore, the program is expected to create work opportunities in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector through the development of capacities of air conditioning technicians. The program is implemented in collaboration with GIZ Ghana, which has experience working on sustainable energy and climate projects. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Energy Commission are also involved, promoting environmental sustainability, reducing pollution, and ensuring Ghana’s energy sector is efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly.
Overall, the Green Cooling Program is a significant initiative that can contribute to Ghana’s sustainable development and climate goals, promoting a cleaner environment, reducing energy consumption, and creating economic benefits.
