Ghana School Feeding Program Strengthened with Training Workshop

The Ghana School Feeding Program has organized a training workshop to reset and strengthen its operations, ensuring that every child in public schools receives a nutritious meal each school day. Hajia Fati, School Feeding Program Coordinator, welcomed participants to the workshop, emphasizing the program’s critical role in fighting malnutrition, increasing enrollment, attendance, and retention.

Program Impact
The Ghana School Feeding Program, established in 2005 with 10 schools, has expanded to cover over 1,900 schools nationwide, impacting more than 1.7 million beneficiary children in all 261 districts and 4 million beneficiary people. The program aims to:

Fight Malnutrition: Provide nutritious meals to children in public schools.
Increase Enrollment: Encourage parents to enroll their children in school.
Improve Attendance: Boost school attendance and reduce absenteeism.
Enhance Retention: Support students in completing their education.

Challenges and Solutions
Despite challenges such as funding delays, rising food costs, and the need for enhanced monitoring, the program remains committed to its goals. Hajia Fati urged regional coordinators to approach their duties with dedication and a solution-oriented mindset.

Government Support
The program has received a boost with the government’s recent announcement of an increase in the feeding grant per child per day from GHC 1.50 to GHC 2. This move is expected to enhance the program’s effectiveness.

Workshop Objectives
The workshop aims to:

Update Policy Directions: Inform participants about new policy directions and operational guidelines.

Reporting Mechanisms: Clarify reporting lines and payment systems.
Sharing Experiences: Provide a platform for learning, sharing experiences, and building synergy.

By working collaboratively, transparently, and effectively, the Ghana School Feeding Program is poised to improve the health, nutrition, and school attendance of children across the country
