Accra, Ghana – The Guta Association’s Christian Darko Women Wing, a group representing Ghanaian women selling school bags and other goods, has appealed to the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to intervene in what they describe as unfair competition from Chinese traders.

The women, who have formed a significant part of Ghana’s informal retail sector, claim that Chinese traders are directly competing with them in local markets, selling similar products at lower prices. They argue that this is not only unsustainable but also unfair, as they believe Chinese traders should focus on creating industries and wholesale opportunities that would enable Ghanaian women to buy and sell products at affordable prices.

“We are not asking for favors, we just want fair play,” said a representative of the Christian Darko Women Wing. “The China should either go back to their country and do business there or open wholesale businesses and factories here, so we can buy from them and sell to our people.”

The women pointed out that many of them travel to China to source goods, but Chinese traders are now bringing the same products to Ghana and selling them at cheaper prices, undermining their businesses.

The association is urging the government to support local entrepreneurs and ensure that foreign traders contribute to Ghana’s economic development rather than stifling it. They demand that Chinese traders focus on creating industries and wholesale opportunities that would empower Ghanaian women to thrive in the retail sector.

The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry has been called upon to address this issue and ensure that Ghanaian women are not disadvantaged in their own market. The Christian Darko Women Wing is seeking a level playing field and opportunities for Ghanaian women to succeed in business.
