“ILGS Launches Research on Youth Economic Inclusion”

The Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) has launched a policy action research project focused on youth economic inclusion through next-generation local economic development. The research aims to inform government policies and programs, particularly on issues around decentralization and local governance.

Local economic development is crucial for promoting economic growth, job creation, and income growth at the local level. However, the current approach to decentralization in Ghana has been criticized for prioritizing enabling environments for businesses rather than actively promoting local economic development.

According to Prof. Nicolas Awortwi Director, ILGS) said, the ILGS is advocating for a developmental governance system that prioritizes local democracy and local economic development. This approach focuses on promoting local industrial policy, job creation, and income growth, and managing municipalities as businesses.

He added that, the policy action research project will explore the concept of next-generation local economic development and its potential to promote youth economic inclusion. The research will be conducted in the context of the Local Governance Practitioners Forum, a broad-based membership platform that brings together key institutions and stakeholders in the local government system.

The research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and practitioners to inform Ghana’s local governance and development policies. The expected outcomes include.

By promoting evidence-based decision-making and stakeholder engagement, the project can help to create a more inclusive and sustainable local economic development framework that benefits all Ghanaians, particularly the youth.
