Journalists Trained to Promote Menstrual Hygiene Awareness
A training session was held for journalists to upgrade their knowledge on menstrual hygiene and advocacy. The training aimed to equip journalists with the necessary skills to educate the public and reduce stigma surrounding menstruation.
The theme for this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, celebrated on May 28, is “Period Friendly World.” The training emphasized the importance of creating a world where girls and women can menstruate with dignity. This includes providing access to sanitary products, separate washroom facilities, and reducing the stigma associated with menstruation.
According to Archibald Adams, Communications Lead, Oxfam in Ghana, said, the training also highlighted the importance of engaging boys and men in the conversation about menstruation. By involving them, we can promote a culture of understanding and support, where men can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with menstruation.
The training discussed ways to address period poverty, particularly in rural areas. This includes providing access to sanitary products, wash facilities, and ensuring that girls do not miss academic work or productive hours due to menstruation.
He said, Corporate institutions can play a significant role in promoting menstrual hygiene by providing sanitary pads in their washrooms. This can help ensure that women and girls can use sanitary facilities with dignity.
The training session was a step towards promoting menstrual hygiene awareness and reducing stigma surrounding menstruation. By working together, we can create a period-friendly world where girls and women can menstruate with dignity.
