Mahama's Second Coming Is Ghana's Chance For Real Transformation – Seidu Agongo

Businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, says President John Dramani Mahama’s return to power is a rare second chance for Ghana to achieve real transformation.

In an article titled _Ghana’s second chance_, Alhaji Agongo said history rarely gives a nation a leader who returns wiser, more experienced, and determined to leave a lasting legacy.

According to him, President Mahama’s journey from Vice President to President, to opposition leader and back to President has taught him great lessons in resilience and governance.

He pointed to the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as clear evidence of resurgence. He said for decades the project stalled, but the government has now acquired the right-of-way and mobilised $2 billion to fund it without heavy external borrowing.

“Roads do more than connect cities. They connect people to jobs, businesses to markets and ambition to opportunity,” he noted.

Alhaji Agongo also praised reforms in the mining sector, including the Gold Board mechanism and the sliding-scale royalty system which allows Ghana to benefit more when gold prices are high.

He said the move towards local participation and value addition will ensure Ghanaians benefit more from their natural resources.

He further commended government for modernising airport infrastructure and reforming State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to make them profitable and accountable.

He stated that President Mahama understands governance better because he has experienced power, defeat and comeback, and that gives him a unique perspective.

“Ghana stands at an important moment. What we have often lacked is sustained execution. The current agenda points to a government seeking to address structural challenges rather than short-term political gains,” he wrote.

Alhaji Agongo, however, cautioned that the President’s success will depend on his appointees, saying they will either make or unmake his presidency.

“If they stay the course, Ghana’s second chance could become one of its greatest success stories,” he added.
