“Timber Contractors Urge Government to Overhaul Forestry Commission”
A group of timber contractors in Ghana has petitioned the government, calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the Forestry Commission.
According to Mr. Bright Kwasi Nkanyasi, the contractors claim that policies introduced by the previous administration have led to the collapse of the timber industry, resulting in significant job losses and revenue decline.
The contractors’ key grievances include loss of foreign revenue, exorbitant fumigation charges, unfair timber stampage pricing, and unrealistic export price requirements. They urge the government to reset the Forestry Commission and demand transparent accounting for funds generated from fumigation and other services.
The impact of the industry’s decline is evident in the over 5 million job losses recorded in the timber sector and the withdrawal of millions of dollars in investment from Ghana to other countries. The contractors are willing to provide all necessary information and support to help revive the Commission for the benefit of Ghana and its citizens.
The government is urged to take action and address the issues affecting the timber industry to prevent further decline. The contractors’ demands include.
1.Resetting the Forestry Commission to address the issues affecting the industry
2.Transparent accounting for funds generated from fumigation and other services
3.Review of policies and programs introduced by the previous administration
By taking action, the government can help revive the timber industry, create jobs, and increase revenue for the country.
