Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, says Ghana’s economic gains are driven by the private sector, not government alone, and commended the Ghana Enterprises Agency for creating “sustainable jobs” by training and equipping youth beyond just classroom lessons.

Speaking at a reception for a United States Virgin Islands delegation, Tsekpo told the business community that government employs about 28,000 people, while the rest of Ghana’s workforce is engaged by private businesses.

Today we are happy our economy is doing well, not because of the super human beings that we are in this government, but with the help of the private sector,” the MP said. “When you wake up as MP, the only thing you think about is how to get out there and face your people, because there are a lot of them waiting out there to ask for job, and we all know that government employs a little over 28,000 out of the large number of those who have been employed in Ghana. The rest are being engaged by the private sector.

Tsekpo, who has served as Hohoe MP for about one and a half years, said GEA had been to his constituency to train and equip young people.

“One interesting thing about GEA is that they don’t just train and leave you to go, they train you, equip you, and see to it that you are well established, doing well for yourself, helping the economy to grow,” he said.

“GEA is making a difference. They go on the streets, pick the young ones, train them, and see to it that they contribute their quota to this very economy. We are all proud of this day.

The MP described the Ghana-USVI economic partnership as timely for deepening business cooperation. He referenced recent remarks by a UK official that “today in Africa, the best place to do business is Ghana, because all our macro indicators are positive.

For the first time in many years, all our macroeconomic indicators are positive. As I said, it’s not by any magic that we are doing, but with the support of the private sector,” Tsekpo said.

He assured the business community and USVI partners of Parliament’s support.

I want to assure our partners and the business community and the support of Parliament of Ghana that this partnership will grow in strength, and Ghana and the United States will benefit from it,” he said.

Tsekpo closed by expressing hope that the evening would mark the start of stronger Ghana-USVI economic ties. The Ghana-USVI partnership, launched through the Ghana Enterprises Agency, targets cooperation in healthcare, education, renewable energy, agriculture, trade infrastructure, technology, tourism, and professional services.
