Igbo King faces embarrassment at Manhyia Palace during Asantehemaa’s funeral rites

Igbo King faces embarrassment at Manhyia Palace during Asantehemaa’s funeral rites The self-acclaimed Igbo King in Ghana, Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, found himself at the centre of controversy after an awkward moment at the Manhyia Palace during the funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

On September 17, 2025, Eze Ihenetu joined thousands of mourners who thronged the palace for the fourth day of the final funeral rites, known as Dote Yie.

The Igbo king made his entrance with a large entourage, dressed in his signature flamboyant regalia.

However, his visit took an embarrassing turn when he attempted to approach the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to pay his respects. Before he could do so, he was stopped in his tracks by the Otumfuo’s linguist, Baffour Osei Kwame Kantankrankyi.

The incident, witnessed by many at the palace, has since sparked discussions online about cultural protocols and the sensitive nature of traditions observed at the Manhyia Palace, whilst others commended Otumfuo’s linguist for doing the right thing.
