Ghana is set to launch its locally manufactured vaccines in 2026 or early 2027, with the first product expected to be a tetanus vaccine. Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey, CEO of the National Vaccine Institute (NVI), has expressed concerns about misconceptions and rumors surrounding the locally manufactured vaccines, which could undermine efforts to build confidence in the products.

The NVI is working closely with regulatory bodies, including the Food and Drugs Authority, and international partners to ensure that the vaccines meet quality and safety standards. The institute has also established partnerships with Indonesian firms to transfer technology and expertise.

To address vaccine hesitancy and misconceptions, the NVI is partnering with journalists to educate the public about the locally manufactured vaccines. The institute has begun training journalists to equip them with accurate information and evidence-based data to counter misconceptions.

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey emphasized the importance of building trust and confidence in the vaccines, and the need for a systematic evidence-based approach to address concerns. He commended the team working on the project, saying they have been doing an excellent job in developing evidence-based approaches to address vaccine hesitancy.

The NVI is working to meet international standards and obtain necessary certifications to ensure the vaccines are safe and effective. The launch of locally manufactured vaccines is expected to boost Ghana’s healthcare sector and improve access to vaccines for the population.
