The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has opened a 10-day intensive training program for officers of the Police Intelligence Directorate, in partnership with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), to boost Ghana’s capacity in intelligence-led policing.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, IGP Yohuno described the collaboration with the FBI Legal Attaché Office in Accra as “timely, strategic, and aligned with the evolving security demands of our country and the wider West African sub-region.

This training program is indeed special to the Ghana Police Service and to the Police Intelligence Directorate in particular. We are privileged to have officers from the FBI of the United States of America here with us to facilitate, teach and guide our officers in the field of intelligence and operational planning,” he said.

The IGP noted that the nature of crime has changed, with criminal networks now operating across borders and becoming more sophisticated, adaptive, and transnational. He said modern policing must move beyond reactive approaches to embrace foresight, precision, and intelligence-driven strategies.

“Under my leadership, the Ghana Police Service has placed strong emphasis on intelligence-led policing as the backbone of our operational strategy. Intelligence-led policing is not merely a concept. It is a philosophy that prioritizes information analysis and proactive decision-making in the fight against crime,” IGP Yohuno stated.

The training covers intelligence collection and handling, human resource development, targeting methodologies, and the production of actionable intelligence. According to the IGP, the goal is to equip the 40 carefully selected officers to become “force multipliers” who will return to elevate standards, influence practice, and drive innovation within the Service.

When the training is completed, officers of the Directorate will be better positioned to collect, analyze and leverage crucial intelligence in support of police leadership efforts in detecting, preventing and solving crime,” he said.

IGP Yohuno reiterated the Service’s vision to become a world-class police institution operating under a transformational leadership framework that prioritizes professionalism, discipline, innovation, and service to the people.

The program is facilitated by the FBI Legal Attaché Office in Accra with support from the United States Government.
