The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced measures to combat the menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, by requiring owners and operators of excavators and farm equipment to register their machines with the authority.

The chief executive of the DVLA Julius Neequaye speaking with the media said, all owners and operators of excavators and farm equipment who are not registered with DVLA are required to locate the nearest DVLA office within their jurisdiction to register their machines within two weeks, beginning today.

According to him from June 1, the Ghana Police Service and its operational team will go around the country to arrest and confiscate any excavator or farm equipment that is in operation and in any mining site or for commercial use without registration with the DVLA.

Mr Neequaye said, a registration team has been constituted to register excavators and farm equipment at the port of entry, enabling the identification and tracing of ownership and operations of these machines.

He said, the DVLA is collaborating with other stakeholders, including the Ghana Police Service, Criminal Investigation Department, Minerals Commission, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and Customs Division of Ghana, to effectively fight the phenomenon of galamsey.

The objective of these measures is to curb the use of unregistered excavators and farm equipment in illegal mining activities, which pose an existential threat to the country and its future generations.
