“Accra’s Waste-to-Wealth Initiative: A Step Towards a Cleaner, Greener City”
The Waste to Purpose project, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming waste management in Accra, has been launched with the goal of turning waste into an opportunity for innovation, job creation, and environmental renewal. The Executive Secretary to the Mayor, Alfred Boahen Frimpong, emphasized that the project is a transformational cultivation that will help the city achieve its goal of becoming one of the cleanest cities in Africa by 2026.
Accra faces a significant burden of plastic pollution, which strains the environment and public health. However, with partnerships, commitment, and creativity, the city can flip the script and turn waste into a resource.
The Waste to Purpose project aims to achieve several objectives, including encouraging innovative solutions to waste management, creating jobs and supporting entrepreneurship in the waste management sector, and reducing environmental degradation and promoting sustainable practices.
The project is expected to have several benefits, including improved waste management, job creation, environmental benefits, and economic benefits. The licensing system will enable the government to regulate the sector and prevent illegal activities. The government will also be able to provide support to waste dealers and entrepreneurs, including fair prices for their goods.
The Executive Secretary to the Mayor expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who have contributed to the mission and emphasized the importance of collective action in achieving the project’s goals. With commitment and partnerships, Accra can build a future where waste becomes a resource and purpose drives progress.
