Ghana is celebrating Palliative Care Day this October, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote palliative care. Alhaji Hafez Adam-Taher, Director of the Technical Coordination and Health Planning Directorate at Ghana’s Ministry of Health, announced that Ghana has won the bid to host the African Palliative Care Association (APCA) conference in 2028.

The Ministry of Health has made significant progress in promoting palliative care, incorporating it into nine health policies, including mental health and non-communicable diseases. Capacity building for the workforce is also underway, with training programs in place to ensure healthcare professionals are equipped to provide quality palliative care.

Ghana’s win to host the APCA conference in 2028 is a testament to the country’s commitment to palliative care. The conference will bring together experts and stakeholders from across Africa to share best practices, research, and innovations in palliative care.

The celebration of Palliative Care Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of palliative care and its benefits. By promoting palliative care, Ghana hopes to improve the quality of life for patients with life-limiting conditions and their families.
