Ghana has been chosen to host the 7th Africa Regional Committee Meeting of the International Solar Alliance, a prestigious event that brings together global leaders and experts in the field of renewable energy. The meeting is a testament to Ghana’s commitment to leading Africa’s renewable energy revolution.

Mr. Seth Terkper, Economic Advisor to the President of Ghana, emphasized the vast potential of solar energy in Africa, noting that the continent has about 60% of the world’s best solar resources. However, Africa faces significant energy challenges, with about 600 million people lacking access to electricity. The Advisor highlighted the need for effective leadership and innovative financing mechanisms to unlock the potential of renewable energy in Africa.

Despite the challenges, Africa has made progress in solar energy, with the continent’s solar power PV capacity reaching close to 14.3 gigawatts by the end of 2024. Ghana is also making progress, with the country fast becoming a solar leader in the region.

Africa requires about $100 billion annually to meet its renewable energy targets by 2030. However, the continent attracts under 3% of global clean energy investments, underscoring a vast gap. The Advisor emphasized the need for private sector equity investment to meet Africa’s energy security needs.

The 7th Africa Regional Committee Meeting of the International Solar Alliance is a significant event that will discuss the challenges and opportunities in Africa’s renewable energy sector. With Ghana hosting the meeting, the country is poised to play a leading role in Africa’s renewable energy revolution.

By working together, Africa can overcome its energy challenges and achieve a brighter future for its citizens.
